Post-isometric relaxation

Worked on a client yesterday with a long standing history of jaw pain. By focusing massage therapy on the reduction of tension in the muscles in the neck and jaw area, releasing tension in fascia, and elimination of trigger points we have greatly reduced her discomfort. Post-isometric relaxation is an extremely important tool for the restoration of the range of motion.”

A major element of TMJ/TMD is myofascial pain is tension in the muscles and their connective tissue (fascia). By massaging the target muscles, releasing muscle tension and stretching contracted fascia of the muscles that control jaw, neck and shoulders, we can relieve myofascial pain. As the tissue relaxes, circulation of blood increases. This softens the fascia, reducese irritation which causes inflammation and improves the nutrition to the stressed areas. A significant amount of pain relief can result, including a decrease in the strength and frequency of headaches.

Finally, when the tension from postural problems and the contracted tissues are released, range of motion in the jaw, neck and shoulders can improve and the body can return to an easier, natural posture.
